Looking for another size? The same Sigismund is also available with a velvet rabbit fur lining: Habsburg Sigismund Loden Parka with Velvet Rabbit Fur. It may be available in more sizes.
The Habsburg Sigismund is a men's loden parka from the Austrian house of Habsburg, made for the coldest days of the season. The outside is a warm brown loden in the colour Schlamm. Inside, the whole parka and the hood are lined with hamster fur, so the warmth wraps around you from the collar down.
The cut is long and straight, with a button front and a high collar that closes up under the chin. Two large flap pockets and two hand pockets give room for gloves, cartridges and a flask, and a drawcord at the waist lets you shape the back and keep the cold out.
On a still, frosty day in the high seat or on the peg, wear Sigismund over a wool base layer and a knit, with loden or moleskin trousers and warm leather boots. In town, it works just as well over a roll neck or a tweed jacket, with cords or dark jeans. The brown loden goes with green, cream, camel and burgundy.
How do I keep warm in a high seat at minus ten for a whole evening?
Sitting still is what makes you cold, so dress warmer than you think and keep the heat in. A wool base layer, a knit and a long fur-lined coat over it is hard to beat: Sigismund covers your back and thighs, and the fur-lined hood stops the heat escaping at the neck. Add warm boots and a hat, and you can sit the whole evening.
Is there one jacket that works both for hunting and in town?
Yes, if you choose a classic material and a clean cut. Loden has been worn for hunting and in Alpine towns for generations, and a straight brown parka like Sigismund looks just as right over a roll neck on the way to dinner as it does in the forest.
Is a loden jacket warm enough for a high seat, and does it handle rain?
Loden is dense, boiled wool that keeps wind out and sheds light rain and snow, and it stays quiet when you move. On its own it is a good autumn layer. With a full fur lining, as in Sigismund, it becomes one of the warmest coats you can wear for cold, still hunting.
